Another year of stopBSL's !RARE! Breed of the Month has come to and end, and again here is the recap looking back on all of the amazing rare breeds that we had the absolute pleasure of sharing with our group members!

January – Lagotto Romagnolo



"The Lagotto Romagnolo, also sometimes known as the Romagna Water Dog, is a small to medium sized Italian breed of dog in the sporting group, bred as a hunter, retriever, water dog and is the only purebred breed of dog recognized as a specialized truffle searcher. "

February – Large & Small Münsterländer





"The Large & Small Münsterländers, originating from the Münster region of Germany, are two gun dog breeds that belong to the family of the longhaired German pointing dogs. While coming from the same area, these two breeds were actually developed from different breeding stock and are not related as their names would suggest."

March – Swedish Vallhund



"The Swedish Vallhund is a small, powerful, fearless breed that has been kept for centuries as a farm dog used for herding cattle and sheep. It is believed that the Swedish Vallhund is indigenous to Sweden and goes back more than 1000 years to the days of the Vikings."

April – Pyrenean Shepherd

May – Kishu Ken



"The Kishu Ken is an ancient Japanese breed dating back before recorded history, and it predates both the Akita and the Shiba.It is said the Japanese wished to create the perfect dog and the Kishu Ken was the result... pure white in color and extremely clean, highly intelligent, loyal, faithful, & an excellent hunter."

June – Kai Ken

July – East Siberian Laika



"The East Siberian Laika is part of a group of dog breeds originating in Siberia, that includes the West Siberian Laika, Karelo-Finnish Laika and the Russo-European Laika, all of which are included in the spitz family."

August – Schapendoes



"The Schapendoes, also known as the Dutch Sheepdog, was originally bred to be a herder in the Drenthe province and in the swampy marshlands of the Veluwe of the Netherlands. "

September – Transylvanian Hound



"The Transylvanian Hound, also known as the Hungarian Hound, is an incredibly rare breed used in hunting various types of animals such as buffalo, fox, lynx, and most recently wild boar. Highly regarded and protected by the Hungarians, this ancient breed has remained pure and has existed in its country of origin for thousands of years."

October – Appenzeller Mountain Dog



"The Appenzeller Mountain Dog is one of the four ancient Swiss mountain dog breeds; this is a medium-size dog having legendary speed, endurance, and agility, traditionally used for herding and as a livestock guardian."

November – Hungarian Pumi



"The Pumi is a medium-sized Hungarian breed, a versatile stock dog that is equally adept at gathering, driving and keeping the stock under control. While mainly used for herding, the Pumi’s athleticism is most notable in agility, making the breed among one of the top agility dogs in Europe."

December – Chinook
